Announcement From The Government of The Republic Of Burundi Announcing The Unexpected Demise of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of The Republic of Burundi
The Government of the Republic of Burundi announces with great sadness to Burundians and to the International Community, the unexpected demise of His Excellency Pierre NKURUNZIZA, President of the Republic of Burundi, at the Cinquantenaire Hospital "NATWE TURASHOBOYE” de KARUZI, because of a cardiac arrest.
While he had spent the afternoon of Saturday 06 June 2020 attending a Volley ball match at NGOZI, it was during the night of 06 June 2020 going to Sunday 07 June 2020 that His Excellency Pierre NKURUNZIZA, President of the Republic of Burundi felt a malaise and quickly went to the Karuzi Hospital for treatment. He was admitted to hospital for feeling ill. On Sunday, his health improved and he spoke with the people who were next to him.
To the great surprise, in the morning of Monday 08 June 2020, his state of health suddenly changed with a cardiac arrest. Immediate resuscitation was undertaken by a multidisciplinary team of doctors for several hours with cardiorespiratory assistance. Despite intense, continuous and adapted care, the medical team was unable to recover the patient.
The Government of the Republic of Burundi expresses its deepest sympathy and condolences to the Burundian people in general and to their very distressed family in particular. Burundi has just lost a worthy member of the country, a President of the Republic, a Supreme Guide of the National patriotism. May Almighty God have his soul. As He was an example for all Burundians, of someone who loves and respects God, the Government of the Republic of Burundi asks the Burundian people to remain calm and serene and to accompany His Excellency the President of the Republic with many prayers.
The Government of the Republic of Burundi announces that a national mourning is open for 07 days from June 9, 2020. During this period, the flags will be flown at halfmast.
The condolence books are open at the Presidential Palace "NTARERUSHATSI" for Burundians as well as Representatives of Diplomatic and Consular Missions accredited in Burundi. For the Burundians or other people living abroad, the condolence books are open in the diplomatic missions and Consulates of Burundi.
